Its been a looooooooooooooooooooooong time since I bothered looking into the pirated, errr Other Web-APP.
For clarity I will call it Orgie-APP.
I downloaded 0.9.9.9 which is the "latest"? and "Greatest"??? from .org
I am going to run through an install and post my results here. Since I have done heavy beta testing of WebAPP for years and know it well I will attempt to confine my advice to a simple and limited methodology with a minimal on the negativity.
Look to the next post in this thread to see my thoughts on the 0.9.9.9 Orgie-APP.
First I obtained the latest version of orgie-app from the main website.
Upon unzipping the package I am nostalgic to see the old familiar layout reminicent of old WebAPP installs from the 9.2.x / 9.3.x era.
Not much has changed from the file structure... I am amused to see the "Credits.txt" file missing all of the accomplishments of the actual WebAPP Developers...
Enough looking around and now onto the install itself.
FTPing the files up are as slow and tedious as I remember... I am spoiled by the new installation methods used in the WebAPP Script of today. (.net WebAPP for the uninitiated.)
Now lets keep in mind I am running this install in a SUB FOLDER on one of my TEST DOMAINS. The folder is /org and I then ftped all files up into this folder.
I jumped over and CHMODDED the install.cgi to 755 which makes it executable and capable of running.
Upon opening the site I am greeted with a "Coming Soon " notification on my main folder. Now really it would make more sense to have a small bit of information informing the user they need to chmod their install.cgi file to 755 along with a link that would toss the user to that file once thats done. While a forward to the install.cgi would be good as well, it wouldnt be helpful for newbies who are unaware of the concept of chmodding a file to make it executable. but hey, What do I know?
Now after manually typing in the url to the install.cgi file I find myself with the standard OLD setup window from years gone by.
Now keep in mind that I am installed into a sub folder... I see the install.cgi file is still bugged in this package for installs not done directly in root. Odd. I remember this being fixed YEARS ago in verion 0.9.9.2.x WHat happened here?
So after manually fixing the paths I run the install script.
Upon running I am given a screen showing me all of the various things it successfully did... Yay.
When offered to check if it installed correctly, I clicked and a window opened showing me the new WebAPP running... Whats that? A broken image??? yes a HUGE one right there on the front page... the banner is missing? Could this be the dreaded SUB FOLDER issue again? WTF? Ok... will look into that shortly.
continuing with the install I click the "submit" button to edit my index.html and delete the install.cgi file.... lets hope all is well.
OK... I am installed.... heading over to my new "App" install I jump right in and sign in as admin using the standard password of "webapp".
Whats this? Confirm myself??? hmmm after pinching myself to see I am not a robot I realised they wanted me to type in the letters posted up there...
Hey I remember these OLD letter images... damn thats OLD.
OK... so now I am logged in as admin. Yay.
I edited my profile noticing the old "classic" profile coding of years gone by. Time for an update or something here really... just picking your age shows the old style of code still in this package. I am shocked its still like this. oh well... I finished editing the profile... and noticed that same messed up banner... I clicked on "View All Advertisements" to see if I can figure out the issue...
Ahuh!!!! Its that OLD Sub Folder ISSUE!!!! The banners are looking in my /images folder and not my /org/images folder... no wonder... good thing we fixed this little annoyance.
OK.. Now for something different...
SITE ADMIN.
Um... Hello... I remember you.
Actually I have a Site Admin the same as that one here on this old site running 0.9.9.3.3
Albeit I am missing the fancy images which have absolutely no purpose except to give the user the feeling their Site Admin panel is more than just the old pile of links I remember it to be...
Whats this? A link for "web-app security bulletins" ??? Now rolling my mouse over this link gives me an odd response for its linking position... I am not sure I trust a link that is hidden from me...
going into the core code to see what this really does.
While looking for a simple piece of code I am surprised at the copy/paste job done in order to remove the admin section to its own secperate files and out of index.cgi...
Interesting nonetheless... but onto what I was looking for... I trace the link I find odd to the /cgi-bin/cgi-lib folder in a file called admin.pl in the sub called "siteadmin".
The code I see looks less suspicious now... and here it is.
if (-e "$config_dir/newconfig.dat") { updatebutton(); }
Interesting... This is obviously a part of some form of information distribution system where a user of the script can click this link to open some form of window to get information and updates and such... I wonder what other information is recorded by the server you are connecting to though...
There is a problem with your site reading the updates page from web-app.org. This may be due to some firewall or other setting on your site causing it to not feed the correct referring page information required for web-app.org to display the page. This is done for privacy reasons so that only those with active WebAPP sites may read the page, since this page is likely to have confidential security information from time to time.
Web-app.org would like only you and others with active WebAPP-based sites to have this information, and not those who may use it for the wrong purposes.
Please contact web-app.org for more information and reporting of any problems you might have with the updates feed we are trying to provide to you.
Thank you, WebAPP
Thats interesting... So in order for me to get updates and security information I basically HAVE to access this page from within my site which will give the URL of my site TO .org for some magical mystical purpose.
Um... This really doesnt look good. I am curious as to what other information may be passed on in other sections of the site...
Well I will skip this section of the Site Admin and focus on the code itself.
Back in a bit with another nail-biting post on my Review and Beta-Test of Orgie-APP 0.9.9.9!!!!
I deleted banners... edited a banner. turned banners off and on again...
Nothing New Here. I am dissapointed.
Language Admin...
Um... WHy would a CMS come with English AND Norwegian?
Arent there any other languages?
First, it should be standardised with English and then you add what languages you want later.... Or have All Languages installed. One or the other... Where does Norwegian come into play in 99.5% of the uses of this script? On, Didnt you write the Norwegian Language File they are using? Let me check the code...
WTF?????????
code:
# File: Modified: Translated May 2007 by Jan for 0.9.9.7 # # Modified: 11 May, 16 May, 29 May, 25 June, 6 Aug by Jos # # Modified: 9 Sept, 1 Oct, 13 Oct 2006 by Jos for 0.9.9.4 # # Modified: Nov 2006, Jan 2007 by Jos for 0.9.9.5 # # Modified: 3 Mar 2007 by Jos for 0.9.9.7 # # Modified: Apr through Oct 2007 by Jos for 0.9.9.8 # # Modified: 2008 by Jos and my2cents for 0.9.9.9 # # Modified: Translated to Norwegian 2008 by Jan for 0.9.9.9 #
I could have sworn On wrote that file
Oh well... so aside from a single stray extra language file that really should NOT be in the package... The Language admin is still 0.9.9.3.3 based code... wheres these updates I keep hearing about?
Now Onto... Lets see... I am going to look for something new on this Site Admin Page...
Column Administation
Whats this? Something new?
Well It seems like its something new... the only new thing I see in this package... A "Column Manager" which is basically a right and left block editor on one page, which allows you to toss blocks from left to right... at least by the images which point from side to side...
How long has it been since 0.9.9.3.3 and this is the only new innovation? right to left block movement... Yay.
While I like it, I am disappointed once again by the limits I see before me.
While this is one point in favour of innovation, the implimentation doesnt do it justice.
And on we go...
I am going to skip most of the Site Admin and go straight into customising This site for some supposed usage...
A fancy NavBar doesnt mean much if thats all there is thats new... I also notice a bugginess to the loading of the images for the NavBar...
I noticed the preloader javascript in the package as I FTPed it up... and know its from a GPL Source and dropped into the script without much optimization... so this could be the answer to the image load glitches I am experiencing.
While it seems that at the rate of development to get from 0.9.9.3.3 to this 0.9.9.9 whatever it is... the bugs and issues I see could take this development team a couple years to fix these small issues...
While I think its not a very good use of my time, I will install the available themes and see if I am amazed out of my coma...
Here goes nothing...
BB-Blue: A Theme I always liked and had updated the beta in the past for various issues it had... I am sure my work is in this file as well, although im sure credit was massaged out of the download package. Ahhh... just as I expected.
Meanwhile... loading it up I hope to see something amazing... something better than I remember it to be...
and I see??? The Same BB-Blue I remember from 0.9.9.3.3!!!!
OK... Onto the next theme...
Colour Theme: An even worse implimentation of the old "ColourMe" theme. NEXT...
Old Fashioned Theme: Wow... a refreshing updated old standard theme. I like it... brings back memories. NEXT...
Passion B/G/R Themes: OK... Now these look good... until you realise they are just slightly updated versions of the old "Two" Theme. NEXT...
TechBlack: I reserve my judgement of this one decent theme which could use a bit of work to make it quite nice.
Enough of the Themes... I am only testing actual 0.9.9.9 developed themes, and well according to the base website... thats it.
Now I must say I expected more for the amount of development time afforded the development of "Orgie-APP".
I will look into themeing in more detailshortly... but now, On to Mod Testing. In specific... I will start by testing out some of my old mods in it. More on this later.
Before I start Mod Testing...
Front Page Administration
WTF? I remember this being more informational in the past. And tell me why I would need to have every possible function turned on in an install? Redundant junk that takes away from the classic WebAPP Model. More Banty-isms? Turn this off, Turn that off and FINALLY I have a site I can look at and enjoy.
